Environmentally Friendly Mono-dose Packaging for Laundry
Powdered detergents ruled U.S. households in the ’50s and ’60s. In the ’70s and ’80s, plastic use surged, and liquid detergents in HDPE jugs took over. By the 2000s, single-use pods gained popularity for convenience, though PVOH-based formats have faced scrutiny over their ability to fully break down.
Once things is for certain, there is a growing trend to return to powdered formulations in laundry, but it’s happening in new formats with a sustainability-first twist. Traditional liquid detergent contains up to 90% water, which is heavy to ship and inefficient. Powdered formulations often allow for a reduction or elimination of plastic jugs and are more concentrated for cleaning performance.
As the market shifts back toward dry, concentrated, and low-waste formats, SmartSolve enables brands to deliver powder or tablet-based detergents in packaging that dissolves on contact with water — no mess, and no need for a large plastic jug.
Our water-soluble paper-based materials are 100% biodegradable and microplastic-free. Tested to the FG 502 flushability standard, our X-Series pouch stock dissolves completely—leaving no waste behind. And we didn’t stop there, our latest advancement, PureNil™ 0, is 100% bio-based (zero plastic) and perfectly suited for laundry.
