October is winding down, and with only a week left, we’re thrilled to have been part of the Race to Zero Waste (R20W) movement this year! As a nonprofit organization, Race to Zero Waste is dedicated to making zero waste a reality by educating the public and taking action toward an equitable circular economy. Key zero waste principles include source reduction, reuse, re-earth, and the elimination of single-use plastics. These simple but powerful actions can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help us mitigate the effects of climate change. As the climate crisis continues, the need to act swiftly is undeniable.
October: Zero Waste Month
Zero Waste Month, led by R20W, transforms the Race to Zero Waste into a sprint for 31 days! During this global campaign, people are encouraged to step up their zero waste efforts by trying new sustainable habits and sharing their progress on social media. From everyday individuals to large organizations, Zero Waste Month is a call to action for everyone.
The campaign highlights the voices of zero waste advocates and experts and fosters discussions on the challenges of accessibility and equity within the zero waste movement. This October, we’ve seen inspiring themes that align perfectly with SmartSolve’s mission: enabling people to better care for the planet by pioneering zero waste packaging technologies.
Weekly Themes for Zero Waste Month

SmartSolve’s Role in Zero Waste Month
We were excited to have Ashleigh Hotz, our Marketing Director at SmartSolve, featured in Week 3’s expert interview on greenwashing. Ashleigh joined other industry experts including Kristine Kubat and Jennifer Wendt. These women discussed how to differentiate between authentic sustainable practices and misleading marketing claims, a crucial conversation in today’s market.
If you missed it, you can still watch the replay on YouTube! We’re proud to contribute to the global discussion on sustainability and encourage everyone to stay vigilant when evaluating green claims.
How to Spot Greenwashing:
Greenwashing is when companies use misleading marketing to appear more environmentally friendly than they truly are, often masking practices that don’t align with real sustainability. Here are a few things to look out for:
- Vague or Unsupported Claims: Words like “natural,” “eco-friendly,” or “green” without any verification can be red flags.
- Images of Nature: Nature imagery alone doesn’t mean a product is sustainable. Look for certifications or proof behind the claims.
- Hidden Trade-Offs: If a product boasts one sustainable feature but lacks others, it may be greenwashing. For example, recyclable packaging is great—but what about the product inside?
- Unclear Certifications: Certified sustainable products often have verified third-party labels. Know the reputable certifications that signify legitimate environmental practices.
